PC v NPC positions

Post by Harroghty » Sun Jun 18, 2006 9:36 pm

I know that there has been some discussion previously about characters claiming to have titles or some kind of noble affiliation but I've got an idea along that vein. I think that installing PCs in public positions in lieu of NPCs would add a great deal of depth to the game.

There are certainly some NPCs that would be impractical to replace due to their roles in quests or general game functions but there's a lot of leeway outside of those. Magistrates, constables, guildmasters, etc... could all be staffed in a similar manner to how high priests currently are. Groups like the Waterdeep City Watch already offer some kind of entrance to positions like this but to expand that would be interesting.

Maybe the honus for coding the necessary areas could be placed on the individual or existing areas could be used in order to minimize new coding.

The positive side of a MUD like FK vice freeform roleplaying (ie AOL RP) is its structure so it would be nice to see some opportunities to overcome the limits of the structure and open up a new avenue for some roleplaying that would help people invest in specific game areas. Just a thought. Cheers.

I was having the same thought last night but abandoned it due to problems with my brain.... it wasn't quite working as it should, I couldn't make coherent sentences that acurately portrayed what I was envisioning.

To me this is one of the few issues with the mud that can greatly enhance our world. Why? because it does many things. Adding avenue's for rp is chief among them. One good thing is that if done right everyone could benefit. Creating areas for a guild/faction or noble family becomes less and less something that only 3 or 4 people will ever use and more something that large rp can revolve arround.

Here are my thoughts. First we make a fair ammount say 6 Families. Waterdeep is home to something like 60 or 70 so I would say 6 is a fair place to begin. They each need a villa, consisting of somewhere between 25 and 50 rooms, I am not sure but I think the minimum might be 50. These villas have to look grandiose and impressive.

Second, the head of the house should be played by a player with a considerable ammount of kismet. I think it would be best to have them create a special character specifically for this, so we don't have one character that is in charge of 5 things. Plus the character should be named after the family and the characters rp should be geared toward being an aristocrat more than being an adventure his/her self. Their job would simply be to hire house agents and give direction for rp. They would easily be good as a public face for the Newbie Council as these would be one of the first places young adventurers would seek jobs from and learn basic newbie things.

Next, I think these aristocrats should not be as ageless as your normal pc is. This would serve to push along rp and not allow it to settle in and stagnate to a halt. It would cause them to actively seek a player that can handle the job of playing the next in line and grooming the player into that role. Basically I want the leaders of the houses to actually drive the rp of the game.

Finally for now anyway, Houses need to contribute to the economy of the city. What I envision with this is that if a house fails to pay their taxes then they become empoverished and after that they go into extinction. And if say, all the houses were to fail to pay then Waterdeep suffers rp wise.

Anyway I still can't get the full scope of what I have been thinking into words. So I just thought I would throw that out.
I am ready to meet my Maker. Whether my Maker is prepared for the great ordeal of meeting me is another matter.
