Mining improvement time

Post by Brar » Mon Aug 28, 2006 11:20 am

After some recents tests, we did with Derissa 10h of mining, 10h of spamming mines non stop as I was refreshing her, there was emotes and says between the series of mine, but that's not really time consuming.
And the thing is that she did not raise a single skill point, being at amateur and that she founds between 30 to 40 ores (copper and tin), which is for quite low for 10h of spam mining (which most can't do as they don't all have a priest travelling with them) that's not really motivating for new miners with low skill.

Now, we had think of 2 solutions, one would be to raise the sucess rate of mining at low levels and to raise the ore cost of making trades.

Another one (my favorite) would be to have a "skill" that seach for veins, and once you find a vein you mine in it and get everything of it with 100% rate, but only for a set number of ore, after that you have to go and search another vein. No raising skill in this method, only mining to get ore, nothing else, and that perhaps could be done with "only" areacode, and of course checks for the level of the skill to see if the pc can mine that ore or not.

First, that will greatly reduce the time needed to gather enough ore to craft anything, which only leaves more time to roleplay and are less likely to flag you asocial not playing the multiplayer part of the game for going to mine, for wanting to make a piece of armour (*winks* Dalvyn *winks*).
And even more so if the Dalvyn's skill point system is introduced ,(*do the cheerleader thing*Go Dalvyn Go!), mining would then only be to find the ore needed to craft, and no more mining to raise one's skill.
And secondly, I personally think it's better rewarding to go and finds ore directly, spending an hour doing so than to go and have to wait for 10h to find one piece of ore from time to time and having to spend all your free time doing that (and getting bad remarks from peoples for being solo/clique or whatever so simply ending up the mining)

Just some ideas,
Brar

PS: it is a first draft, I know it requires tweaking and refining.

Most dwarves had to go through the trouble of raising their mine skills, and I personally don't see why it should be easy. It takes a very long time, and should be worked towards, not something to easily being given away. I think mine is fine the way it is, you have to work towards it.

And I don't see why you have to 'twink hardcore for 24 hrs a day' just to improve your mine skills, you don't have to do it all at one time.

Patience is a virtue :)

I did the math, in game turns you spent 5 days mining. In RL do you think you could do better in those after only five days? I would think not. Just my opinion.

Perhaps it the intellegence and other stats related to the skill

Myself I have only minned about 5 hrs and have gained 2 pts in minning at amatur with a minning character.

There is no 'right way' to hold the pick for differences in mining improvements.
