A Apply flags for skills. How much of an affect?

Post by Kelemvor » Fri Jun 22, 2007 11:24 am

With objects which affect the player's skill in something when worn, what are the limits in terms of the amount of the affect?

Things like Hitroll and Damroll, AC etc are not likely to exceed a plus or minus of 2, but what about something like climbing or swimming, sneaking or hiding? Any guidelines on these?

It probably depends on the skill. For something that is relatively common and not often used like climb or swim, I would imagine improvement by say 6-9 ranks or so (two or three skill levels) would not be out of the question for a powerful magic item. For something like hide or sneak I'd say maybe 6 ranks max. For a combat related skill like 5th attack or dual wield, maybe 3 ranks at most. Generally I believe that there is more latitude given in addition of magical bonuses when those bonuses will not translate into an increased ability to kill powerful mobs singlehandedly or things like that. If someone has boots of swimming, or gloves of aiding, the end result is much different than a sword that increases someone's attack by two or three skill ranks.

I'm thinking mundane more than magical and skills that are not readily improved or that are not unbalancing

So for climbing; things such as ladders, grapples etc

For swimming; 'flotation devices'

For cooking; stoves, pots and pans

etc etc

But thanks for the input :)

For hitroll/damroll, that would be most likely +1. And then again, only if the weapon is obtained after a solid quest.

For skills, the max modifier currently in game is something like +5 I think.

Most objects will have modifiers of +2 for non-combat skills, and +1 for combat skills (though I'd rather avoid modifiers on combat skills like weapon skills, Xth attack, dual wield and so on).
