Custom Wizard spell

Post by Aglaca » Fri Jul 20, 2007 5:06 pm

Is it still true that when a wizard makes it to level 50 they get a custom spell made? Been gone a while and was just wondering about that.

As far as i'm aware, you used to be able to apply to research and develop a spell. There were some pre-requisites for this though.

My understanding is that currently you are unable to do this, and the spells that were researched have been taken out of the game..

Spells have not necessarily been taken out of the game, but reclaimed and renamed for the rightful D20 based spell some of them were based on.

Myn's Mirror Image, for example, was simply named Mirror Image, and set on trainers as a normal D&D wizard spell.

Llanthyr's Mending was changed to Make Whole, and recast as the D&D cleric spell that serves the same purpose.

Summer's Freedom, is now the D&D Freedom of Movement.

It was decided upon admin discussion during the spell system overhaul, that it was initially a mistake to assign what would normally be a common D&D spell, with a proper name of a creator, and restrict that "creator" of the spell as the only person who was a master and could teach it. Logistics such as the fact that people leave (thus the "master" who could teach it no longer accessible to other casters), and other conflicts that made no sense (Summer's Freedom, which is a common D&D cleric/bard spell, is a domain spell for the Fate domain, which Beshaban clerics also get. How odd for a Beshaban cleric to cast a spell "created" by a Tymoran).

Basically, consider it a small act of revisionist history in the FK world. Those once "created" spells are not, in revision, spells created by the cast of FK, but generic, out-of-the book spells for clerics/wizard/etc as the D20 sourcebook dictates.

It was also decided, as I recall during the discussions, that there would not be a reinstatement of renaming spells for a character on FK. The logistics above just make it not practical for the new spell system.

Yeh sorry I didn't explain that very well. By "taken out of the game" I meant those that had them previously don't have them now, in my case, I don't have Llanthyr's Mending anymore..

As Kregor says, the spells are still there, just renamed to bring them up to speed with FR canon.

I understand the renaming of the spells, but does that mean a lvl 50 wizard gets a free grandmaster spell to teach the other up and coming wizards?

Just seems that there a whole lot of niffty higher level spells that I'm sure took a lot of time to code, and doesn't seem to be any trainers for them (At least wizard and cleric wise, not sure about other classes (Of course clerics have a slight saving grace of free domain spells)).

Not for the moment.

There are two main obstacles before that can happen:

1) saving throws being fixed - this should take place before higher level spells are made more freely available

2) we get a better "teach"ing system
