Mining
Mining
Where would one find an Elven Ranger mining? I was mining in the peaks with another player and was asked why we were there. I personally thought that it was because neither of us had payed attention to the room description and seen that it was a rather cramped area. I had thought that to be the reason we were 'confronted' but whomever was speaking to us said that they didn have a proble with the other player mining there, just that there was something wrong with an elven ranger mining there..
I dont really understand and was curious as to what others thought. Just looking for clarification and discussion.
Thanks

This might just be my opinion, but I disagree with any nature follower mining. *shrug* To me, it is almost as bad as logging.
That might be what the other player was getting it

What about those who believe that nature provides to those who need. Nature, obviously, does not just hand it to them, but instead makes available for the taking, much as a fruit grows on a tree.Glim wrote:This might just be my opinion, but I disagree with any nature follower mining. *shrug* To me, it is almost as bad as logging.

I think those who take from nature respectfully are of a different shade than those who take without thought or care.
(Coming from a place that thrives on logging, I have a vested OOC interest in this topic as well).

Take into consideration the area of the mine, and if it has an effect on its surrounding areas, maybe the mine you were using was known to suck the earth dry of its metals. Also remember that being of nature type and mining, you should only be taking what you need, not what you need to advance your level.
My opinion and not a inferance or accusation. Your opinion is welcome.

So just taking Orplars IC interests into account..
He is an elven ranger. Elves have an interest in swordplay. Rangers arent half bad at it either. Both tend to rather enjoy a nice weapon.
Orplar sought out the trades he has both 'rangerly' and 'not so rangerly' for these two reasons. A, being able to provde arrowheads and such to his fellow rangers that need them, and may not be able to affor them and B) with the hope of opening his own smithing shop in the future. The desire to bring some of the elven smith 'techniques' back to the realms.
those things thought of, how much would be considered what he needs? How much would be too much? Are his ranger and war/crafting interests getting in too much conflict?
I dont think I gave out too much IC info, but if I did please feel free to edit. Thoughts are welcome, and whats been said already is appreciated.
Thanks

Remember that roleplaying is relative to the person doing it. Sometimes a person may not agree with an action you've taken and they will make it known. But as long as you can ICly justify your actions and feel content with that justification then there shouldn't be a problem. But a lot of times when people have a problem with the way you play they tend not to listen when you explain yourself, either, and that presents a problem in communicating your intentions.
But remember also that there are exceptions to every rule, including this one. For example even if it is IC for your character to do something, if that something is code abuse then you still should not be doing it. This is not to say what your were doing was code abuse at all, it's merely an example to show that there are exceptions.
Personally, taking into account the justifications you've given, I don't see a problem with your character mining. Every character has hopes and dreams and wants to make them come true; without them our characters would be static and get old very fast.

Indeed, it really depends on your character and what they think about such actions.
For example, Mariela knows how to mine. (I know. ridiculous huh?) But she hardly ever does it because... well being trapped in a dusty cave rooting around for rocks that half the time try to jump out and kill her isn't her idea of a good time. However, because she does know how to mine, she is most of the time willing to go on mining expeditions with dwarves, ect and help out with some aid and good company for the trip. Especially if the mining trip is going down into dangerous places.
You can have skills that you don't neccisarily have to "mine the crap out of".
Just like you can have elves who know how to mine for the sake of understanding what it does to the land and maybe how to manipulate the mining to make it a betterment to nature rather than against it. What exactly to look for if the ground has too much in a certain deposit, ect. (Not that should happen... but thinking hypothetically.) And there really isn't a problem with elven weaponmasters, ect. They had to get their weapons from somewhere or they would all be dwarven this and that. Rather than elven this and that.
I believe the most common elven response to "You are elf! Don't do that." is... Stare.. and then maybe a delightful grunt of acknowledgement and then continue on with what you are doing.
And I'm with Jaeonic, you gotta watch out you are not abusing the code while you are mining. Make sure you are not spending 12 hours mining just because you gotta get that skill up. Make sure you are doing it for the right IC reasons. And what hte heck.. bring a friend along maybe.

Just to clarify, I don't believe this would be code abuse. If that is what you want to do on your character, then by all means, do it.Mariela wrote:And I'm with Jaeonic, you gotta watch out you are not abusing the code while you are mining. I have to agree with Glim. Some races, like dwarves, spend their days eating and working the mines. I hardly call it code abuse when my dwarf spends many hours in the tunnels, its being a dwarf.Glim wrote:Just to clarify, I don't believe this would be code abuse. You do not need to change the world, merely leave it a little better than how you found it.

There is a vast difference with doing what is your culture heritiage as a dwarf, and spending a great deal of time in a mine... and then saying..
"Oh let's see.. no one I know is online. I have 12 hours, and my skill at mining is at unskilled... so I am going to spend the next 12 hours just mining and mining nad mining.. and heck I'll even detune my amulet and just mine for 12 hours straight for the explicit goal of getting Grandmastered in Mining in 12 hours time."

Impossible, heh. And while what you say might be considered by some as "twinking" the fact of the matter is that it is not code abuse.Mariela wrote:goal of getting Grandmastered in Mining in 12 hours time."
Code abuse is using the code in a way other than it was originally intended in order to gain some kind of advantage. Mining for 12 hours straight if you want to is not abusing code.
