Some characters can see what things are made out of, and their approximate weight. My fighter is unable to tell what an item is made of. Being that he is working on armour smithing, I really would like to be able to see what an armour is made of. Its crucial to being able to repair it.
I discussed this with a couple of players on ask earlier, but no one was totally sure what the ability was based off of. Is that aspect of examine tied into the Appraisal skills? Or is it tied into Wisdom? Or perhaps something else?

Weight and material are tied to Wisdom.

My priest character is Sagacious, and borderline omnicient. Yet, cannot tell materials or weights either, I just checked. Is this because they don't have Appraise? Does identifying materials take both high wisdom AND appraise?

Yes, the check is based on Int.
