Weapon Focus Shieldwork

Post by Orplar » Fri Aug 21, 2009 5:21 pm

Hi all,

Was just curious if you were actually able to train 'weapon focus' 'shieldwork'? And if so, if it would actually proove to be beneficial or not.

Anyone know?

I'm also very interested in the answer to this question- It would be incredibly useful, I think. However, since shieldwork is (presumably) coded quite a bit different than the other weapon skills (and probably thrown in there with the weapons for lack of better place to put it, or as a band-aid to a bug regarding it), I doubt it.

At the moment there seems to be some confusion about what, if anything, shieldwork actually does, so not sure exactly what the benefit of weapon focus would be. :?

shieldwork adds a shield's AC to areas other than just his or her arms, and characters with the skill will sometimes take an enemy's attack on it, as of spring 09. I'm not sure if anything's changed or not.

edit> to confirm, I just took an enemy's attack on my shield like 30 seconds ago.

I'm pretty sure it doesn't do anything. Shields seem to give a static bonus regardless of your shieldwork skill. I wouldn't suggest doing weapon focus shieldwork, because weapon focus adds to your hit bonus...and you don't ever hit with a shield.

Don't take weapon focus shieldwork. It will not give you +1 to your AC.

Kallias has grandmaster shieldwork - and he hasn't blocked an attack in hundreds of hours of combat. It is my belief that aspect of shields have been removed to more accurately move in line with pnp use of shield.

As Kallias said, Shields seem to give a bonus to overall AC regardless of whether you have Shieldwork trained or not.

I have yet to block an attack with my shield on Kel :?

I'm still fuzzy on this, and still trying to pin down exactly what's going on. But the current helpfile is now out of date: shieldwork is what gives (some people, in some situations), that "take an attack on your shield" echo. I think in this the code has reverted to what it did "before." I do not understand why some see this echo and not others.

It might depend on the shield you are using. Some shields may be leftovers from earlier periods or not have all the changes. I don't know and can't really prove that this might be the case.

All I know is that I use to get block echoes maybe once an hour, but for the past few months I haven't gotten any at all. I'd be surprised if anyone is getting them, unless it's been changed to factor in level.

I've had the message come once or maybe twice. I am pretty sure it would have been with the polished metal shield if, like Gwain suggested, it might be something with the shields themselves.

I doubt that's it. I GM'd shieldwork with the same shield I still use.

I get this echo now and then, even improved the skill. Not often, but a few times a week probably.

Then perhaps it just doesn't appear when you have +gag. I retract my assessment if so many are still seeing the echo

Wrok gets the echos just about every 10 fights. Twice or so in the longer spars with hungry trolls and wyverns.

I've been fighting a lot lately looking for this echo, and I'm one of the ones not getting any echoes at all. Using 'a tower shield of rock-hard metal. I'm suspecting it has something to do with the shields as well. I'm going to try a different shield a little later and see if it makes any difference.

That may be it, I've had that same shield on Kelend forever, and never seen a block echo.
