[SPELL] Remove dart as a component

Post by Kelemvor » Tue Jul 17, 2007 9:36 am

The discussion around gemstones and item types reminded me of the problem with spells which use a dart as their component.

The dart is item_type_weapon which means
- it has weight
- it can not be carried in a spell pouch in any significant numbers
- it can not be placed in a spell pouch without using a workround

The spells which use a dart are
- acid arrow
- acid shield
- flame arrow
- polar ray

Can I suggest that the requirement for 'a dart' be replaced with 'an arrowhead' instead, since:

- an arrowhead seems more suitable ICly based on half of the spell names
- arrowheads do not have weight
- this would create opportunities for player-player trading and interaction as arrowheads can be created by PC smiths with low levels of weaponsmithing skill.

Sounds like a good idea to me, except I wouldn't know where to find an arrowhead I couldn't even find one on my ranger unless the shortage has been rectified.

One of the main reasons for suggesting this was that arrowheads can be constructed by any player character with even a bare minimum skill in weaponsmithing.

There is also a mob which will create arrowheads if given a piece of metal. I believe that the details for his location are given in the current ranger quest to learn fletching.

Placed into bugzilla as an enhancement, its placed at low priority since there is a workround method to get them in there.

However, I think the workround method should be classified as a bug since the code is there to make it so you don't put non-components into a spell pouch, yet you can with this workround.

Changing the component required from a dart to an arrowhead I can accomplish myself (thank to some tutoring from Marty) so no need to waste time on that aspect.

Can we get a post saying "If there is no other comment, the change will be done by July 21st" before such things are comitted to the game?

Such changes are not limited to just changing spell components. Component warehouses and component shops too need to be updated to reflect the change.

Apologies, after over 100 views on the post and no adverse responses I assumed that there would be no problems with such a change. I did remember to note on the discussion post that any problems should be reported. Fifty percent awareness of the impact at least ;)

A check on where/who darts were currently sold by found only two warehouse mobs. With arrowheads available from PC sources in (I hope) greater numbers I took the plunge and entered the change.

Sorry to have been too keen

I have gone through and made this change, setting the arrowheads to be consumed upon casting. This should increase demand for and make more useful arrowheads, which gives people a purpose when practicing their weaponsmithing.

If there are any problems noted in connection with this, please reply here.

Can we have arrowheads as a mould from the gondar forge, i can not see any negatives from allowing the production of silver arrowheads.

Quick question... A few times now, I have heard people mention the mob that turns metal into arrowheads isn't working. Is it still up and running, responding properly to ingots, rather than pieces or metals? I haven't had time to test it myself, but since arrowheads will be in-demand now...

Also, what will become of the dart Gondar mould? Fairly useless now, eh?

The mobile that makes arrowheads in Waterdeep works correctly.

I just happened upon this thread. So arrowheads, and not darts, are the proper component now? If so, could this also be updated in the 'spellbook' command, please? I would have had no clue such a change had been made had I not stumbled upon this thread. If not, please disregard! Thanks in advance!

The change will only come in with a code update to the main port - which I think happened, but was then reverted today (to fix something else). So, whatever your spellbook says is currently correct, but expect it to change to arrowheads some time soon!

Raona, thanks for the response! Del just only learned some of the arrow spells. He'd have been really sad to have spent a ton of coin stocking up on the components just to realize they didn't work!

Ah, good point! I will attempt to change this to an arrowhead mold, unless anyone argues to the contrary. That provides an alternate (though hardly easier) route to obtain arrowheads, for the non-weaponsmith.

Expensive, hard to get arrowheads are better than no arrowheads, I guess.

It seems strange to me that arrowheads are hard to get. Arrows cost 6 copper. Can't I just buy a bunch of arrows and take off the heads?

(Note that none of my characters use arrows or arrowheads).

arrowhead is one of the easiest thing to find I think, and you can get them in bulk :p

I know of a character that has plenty in her storage, she would be more then happy to get them off her hands... maybe for free depending on who it is :P

Arrowheads are easy to find... if you know the right weaponsmith. If you don't have smithy friends, or play some of our more exotic classes/races, or are just some of our less popular folks... it can be quite difficult to find a supply of components most of us take for granted.

Personally, I feel the supply went down lately. With the new craft system, I'd rather be crafting armor then arrowheads now that I have to choose between the two. My two cents, of course.
