Fixing names on wizard spellbooks

Post by Melusine » Tue Dec 14, 2010 8:23 pm

I ran into something frustrating recently, and have also done so in the past, when the very perfect name you've picked out for your wizard is found unacceptable for one reason or another, and suddenly your name doesn't match with your spell book's cover. What I would like to see is the ability to change the name on your spellbook. When the two don't match, it can look odd, or be awkward when it comes up in conversation! It could be seen as stolen goods, or be thought of as the wrong name. I think the easiest way for this to work is to have the wizard mob in the starting zones be able to know if you've had to go through a name-change (through qbits, perhaps), and offer to 'fix' your book for you. This way there doesn't have to be any Imm hassle with it (aside from setting up the fix) and social awkwardness is averted!

This is one of my old vexations, which I haven't had to deal with for a while since I don't play that many wizards. But it would mean a fantastic change, and certainly less naming anxiety when it comes to our arcane-loving counterparts. :D

I think this is something that most players have had to deal with at some point and is rather frustrating. I usually explain it off a a cousin's spellbook that they never used. I also don't like to have to bother imms for such minor things. I would be very much in favor of this though some pretty interesting stories have come out of it.

Seems like a perfectly sound suggestion, but perhaps the best fix is a hard-code enhancement to the NAME command? Anyone in a good position to confirm that's the best way to go?

I recommend that the PC receive a mark when they first receive the book.

Then, yes, a name command could be used. It would check:

if ownsmark($n)

and then allow only the owner of the spell book to change the name. This is open ended and you could end up with stupid names on the books, but I think a caveat that such behavior may result in permanent consequences, delivered upon receipt of the book, would suffice to mitigate that risk.
