Spell Resistance stopping benedictions:

Post by Selveem » Sun Jun 05, 2011 1:43 am

Spell Resistance is currently blocking benedictions, such as Heal for PCs. Any chance we could make spell resistance more realistic (as it's a choice that a PC character would be an idiot to try to block). Maybe a config option, so that if a player REALLY wants to block benedictions, they can.

I think he means he wants friendly spells to automatically bypass Spell Resistance, not have to spend an action to drop his resistance as it is now. That's actually how it works in D&D, too. You have to lower it as a standard action, then it stays down until your next turn. Lowering Spell Resistance practically wastes your turn while making you vulnerable to enemy magic, but that's intentional.

Spell Resistance is a double-edged sword, as I'm learning in our D&D game now. It was meant to make enemies harder (they only last one encounter), not to empower PCs (they need healing, buffs, etc. to last a whole campaign). The races that get spell resistance are not normal PC races, and they usually have a pretty low life expectancy. I just got it myself, and so far it has blocked all enemy magic while allowing friendly magic. I'm beating the odds so far; I hope my luck holds!

Spell Resistance is an inborn ability that fights off any sort of magic (it can't tell good from bad) that comes from an outside source. If spells that you're casting on yourself are getting blocked, then that's a problem. The help file for Lower makes it sound like you have to lower before casting on yourself. Is this the case, and is it intentional?

There's a feat in 3.5 called Reactive Resistance which could be coded to work the way Selveem has described. It lets you drop your spell resistance immediately (even when it's not your turn), allowing you to get the benefit of friendly spells, then it pops back up when your turn comes around. You should suggest implementing it.

Lower's in place, but unless you're healing yourself it's really difficult to time it to when you see your priest is trying to heal you and when a mob is trying to kill you with fireballs or the like. It's like making a choice between defending yourself or opening the flood gates which is kind of a waste of even having spell resistance to begin with.

Lower's a nice start, but really not a good solution.

Another example is if I make an alias to spell myself up before really difficult combats, I have to repeatedly spam 'lower' to make sure my spells go through or risk wasting slots multiple times.

Based on Keltorn's information, I like the idea of adding the Reactive Resistance feat to smooth this out. It's a nice way of making you pay for your benefit! It's a nice balancing move.

Keltorn makes a good point, but that's in D&D where you are playing turn by turn. The MUD is more seemless than that and because rounds are calculated in this manner, you can't coordinate when you're going to lower your resistances with your Priest.

Even still, my OWN spells should never be subject to my spell resistance: "A creature's spell resistance never interferes with its own spells, items, or abilities."

Unless you have spent all your feat points. I'd prefer it to be a combat configuration option.
Justice is not neccesarily honourable, it is a tolerable business, in essence you tolerate honour until it impedes justice, then you do what is right.

Spelling is not necessarily correct :)

I'm moving this out of bug reporting, into suggestions. It is currently operating as intended, but there is room for enhancement.

I think it should be a configuration option, if you set yourself to resist such magic. It shouldn't just be one type of magic though it should be all magic. You can either set your resistance to be there or to not be there.

I am going to disagree that drow (correct me if I'm wrong, because I dont think any other race has spell resistance) should spend 1 feat point just to get an advantage in allowing friendly spells to bypass. They already have -1 stat point and -1 feat point, and are so to speak 'balanced' comparitively to other races. For those 5 levels that they miss out, spellcasters miss out on spell slots as well.

Not only Drow get it. Most Casters get it too in the form of certain spells available to them.
