Hey all,
So I've only been on the mud a few times, But both times its been quiet. I'm hoping I'm just logging in at odd times (7pm eastern gmt-5), but I had a question that I wasn't able to get answered in game (with ask channel).
Are the maps, located on the website, considering in game knowledge? I ask because I just decided to leave the newbie area, but I really don't know where to go once I leave.
There hasn't been many players on when I log on, whether its my timing or just this time of the year, so I'm kind of at a loss of what to do next.
So my two questions I guess now are,
1. Are the website maps considered in game knowledge or shall i wander aimlessly till I can beg someone for directions?
2. And are there better times to logon to see people?
I haven't mudded in several years so I'm still a little rusty, but I've had an itch lately to RP again and immerse myself into a character's story.
Thanks for any help!
Questions from a new player
Re: Questions from a new player
First I would like to welcome you to FK, it is great to see new players come around. And I do apologize for your questions not getting answered on the ask channel.
We do have a somewhat small community on FK, but due to the holidays the logged characters has been cut way back. It is not necessarily your time of day that is the issue.
As far as maps go. I have always been told and played that if you purchase a map ICly, then the maps on the website are good to go. Most cities have a shop that sells maps.
But when the holidays slow down and people start coming back, you can usually find someone in the Waterdeep market square who can help direct you. Generally there is a person or two who is fairly helpful in there.

Re: Questions from a new player
I am normally around, too, but my game time is very limited. I apologize we've not met on any of my characters yet, but I'm sure as soon as work slows down it'll be far more likely.
As for maps, Dapher is right; it is easiest to purchase them in-game and then RP the knowledge. Alternatively, if your character has significantly high Int, it could be understood that he likely studied geography (knowledge skills are all Int-based).

Re: Questions from a new player
RE: #2 Selveem has a point, but here's another angle: if your character grew up in Waterdeep, for example, then it is logical to assume that he has learned the street names and general locations of most things. So you could probably use the map without committing a role-play faux pas.

Re: Questions from a new player
Thanks for the warm welcome, I'm glad to see another warm body around. And I understand the lack of time to play, I sometimes only go on for a hour or so.
I'm impressed with FK so far, I just haven't had any RP interactions yet and that was the primary reason I came back to mudding. So hopefully I'll see some of you around! After reading the forums and all the help files I have nothing but high hopes!

Roleplay is always out there to be found! Waterdeep is always bustling with roleplay, especially as of late. You can even utilize the board at the Font to put out a message looking for whatever your character would be looking for. That is one thing about FK is that the roleplaying possibilities is unlimited, and you can make the world into whatever you want it to be.

Re: Questions from a new player
For the sake of posterity, to put it clearly:
The maps on the website are considered in-game knowledge and shouldn't be used until you find the relevant map object in-game; but if a map of your hometown is available, using that on the argument that you grew up there, and would therefore know that information, is OK.
