Pets wearing armour?

Post by Drakenor » Sat Apr 03, 2004 10:49 pm

Would it be bad RP to have a pet wearing armour? I have a falcon and she wears armour, like leggings a collar, helmet etc. I had these resized to the tiniest size I could get them and made sure it was lightweight leather that wouldnt restrict movment RP wise. I was recently confronted with this and I was wondering if it was bad RP to have my falcon wearing some armour.

A pet/mount should only be wearing armour or clothing that it is IC for them to wear. A hood for a falcon would be IC, but not a helmet or any other type of armour.

Armour exists within the game that is ICly appropriate for some pets and mounts.

For example, barding for horses and collars for cats. I recall seeing hoods and such for would-be falconers.

Any other armour, not specifically described as being for a pet or mount should be avoided. Re-sizing an item does not make it appropriate attire for the creature.

More importantly, it is unlikely to be ICly correct for most animals to wear equipment. The help files are a good read on this subject. I'd paste it in here, but we seem to have a connection problem right now.

I see, what about a armour without having the pets name in it, but ICly appropiate for them to wear?

Your falcon should not be wearing said armour. Leggings no matter how you cut it cannot fit tiny birdie legs. There are objects specifically for a falcon to wear. The collar is understandable. But for an animal with wings to have on studded leather it a bit less understandable. Would your bird be able to move in that armour IRL? It is very highly unlikely. I think a bird would probably bite you until you had no hand before letting such restraining body wear be put on himself even. =P Some times are just pushing the boundries of belief, and I think full armour is completely doing so. Just my thoughts.

I have the list of what she is wearing:

a peregrine falcon is using:
<worn on finger> a gold ring (perfect)
<worn around neck> a sapphire necklace (perfect)
<worn on neck> a fox fur collar (superb)
<worn on body> a supple leather armour (perfect)
<worn on head> a studded leather helm (perfect)
<worn on legs> studded leather leggings (perfect)

None of that is ICly appropriate and I would venture that the falcon wouldn't even be able to fly with all of that stuff weighing it down.

I see, what about the collar and rings? The rings I RP them on the end of her feet so I can indentify her when she is off in the air with other falcons. *oooww* My hand...hehe I'll change it when the site gets back up and running

Out of curiousity, where would the falcon be wearing said ring? Do you mean on a talon (because I can't see that working, personally) or around its leg? Or on a feather? :P

I can't see how a ring made for a human finger would fit and stay on a falcon's talon, especially if the bird in question were particularly active. It would probably be your best bet to only equip your pets with equipment that is clearly and specifically made for them, in my opinion. Especially with birds of prey - you'd have a hard time convincing one of those to wear just about anything. :)

Although a couple acceptable items do come to mind - loose fitting light necklaces, ties and cumberbunds, perhaps aura and energy equipment. These might be acceptable.

Below are the posts relevant to this topic from another thread of similar content that I deleted:
I was wondering about the uses of pets in battle. Could a mounted fighter, uses his horse to kick an opponet? Or charge the opposition, giving a bash, with the brest of the horse? Thus leading to animals of mechanical nature.. say with a side mounted balista?

Also about pets wearring arrmour, Do you only give them barding and whatnots? or can my pet jackalope wear a cape, and a fancy hat? I know about humanoids, like a drow mercenary wearrring armour, but does this extend to the cute cuddlys?

The omni-present, yet ever-elusive.. Cret
Basically use your common sense when equiping a pet. If your pet is a horse, then there is plenty of barding in the game that you can "dress" your horse in.

If your pet is a cat, then you are pretty much limited to a collar around its neck. Much the same with a dog and other similar pets.

If your pet is a humanoid such as a slave, then dressing them in humanoid clothing would be appropriate.

If we find that someone has dressed their horse in human armour then we will tell that player to fix the situation or lose the rights to having a pet.

As for ordering your pets to do things, well that depending very much on how well trained the mount is. A general riding horse, is likely to be of little help in battle and is more likely to buck and flee in terror. A horse that has been trained specifically for battle such as a warhorse, could likely be ordered to go into battle with its master. A cat is unlikely to do much for you in battle and the ability to order a cat to attack is likely not to work. Try ordering your house cat into attacking an intruder. A well trained dog however, especially a war dog, may go into battle for you. Much like some dogs in real life are guard dogs and will attack intruders.

Use your common sense, if we find that you are ordering pets to do unlikely things, we will ask you to desist. If you do not desist then you will lose the ability to have pets.

Sharni.

P.S. Cret, please edit your post for the massive amounts of typos, and in future take the time to read your post a couple of times to make sure you have no mistakes.
In the case of rangers and druids I have seen some equiped with small wrist guards etc. Tiny lil slivers of leather really.. even some of the artwork in the 2nd edition ranger's handbook shows pictures of a sloth (I think) with a small pack on (small.. it would NOT hold your hoarde of treasure) and small leather embossed wrist guards around what would be its wrists.
