Aging Humans

Post by Hviti » Fri Feb 11, 2005 6:42 am

For humans or other short-lived races, as characters age can one roleplay them as not aging quite as fast as they actually are in game?

Does one have to RP a loss of strength/flexibility/mobility as a character ages?

and

Do characters have to die of old age?

In short, how much does the age in score affect how you RP?

Gwain is going a fine job at that IC. You do not have to go by the age on your score if you want to RP it older or younger.
One of my chars need to be older, but it still says "A young male human" and the help file says you can not change it after a certain level...so i'm SOL

Are you asking people's opinions on how they RP their chars, or the Imms for what their standard is?

In the event it is the first...
Do characters have to die of old age?
As far as getting to be 'old' and dieing of old age... I belive it takes a month of time IRL to age one year in game. Say the character is.... 30. You've been around a while, RPed here for a good amount of time. No, in order to age to... Oh, lets say 75 years old (Yes, you can probably get older... Considering even if they don't have the advanced medicine we have, they still have divine healing which can do wonders our 'sciences' can not... But 75 sounds like a nice round number.). Thats 45 IRL months... Almost 4 years. Thats quite some time before your character is going to pass away, so I doubt you have much to worry about for quite some time now...
Does one have to RP a loss of strength/flexibility/mobility as a character ages?
As far as stats... Sure, in RP, why not? If I'm a 65 year old Fighter, resting on the ground, I'm going to smote slowly standing up, maybe commenting on how I can hardly tell if its my armor or my bones that creaks more anymore.

Do they have to? Probably not (but maybe...). Are they encourgaed to? Probably so. Would I do it? Most definatly...

In the end its up to how you play your character and how you choose to accept his or her stats. There are those out in the real world that can do things at 104 years old that others can't do at half that age and there are those that at 65 become slower and more pained...in the end it is up to how you play your character.

Remeber, you're only as young as you feel and as old as you think.

My main reason for this was that one of my characters was absent from the game from age 18 or so to age 25, and everyone I met said, "Wow, it's been almost a decade." I wasn't sure whether to confirm such or not, since he was gone from before the aging system started.

This also brings up the question of whether characters could be 'incubated/hibernated' at the same age if they are gone long periods.

Re: Sean, I am looking for both, I think :)

Personally I don't think that they should be hibernated. If you are going to be a way for an extended period of time, include it in your rp. You could tell others that you will be away, or that you are going to take a leave of absence to travel the world. There are many reasons to be gone for long periods of time. It would not be right if you didn't age, but everyone else did. I hope you get my meaning.

Just in case you're thinking of playing someone older or younger don't forget to apply first. As I said before you need to decide how to rp age and when you do try to do it in a way you enjoy and relate to. It's not work its enjoyment. The rl world often or not takes us away from the mud so when we return we just need to find a way to rp absence or not its up to you. enjoy.

this is from the helpfile on age, to read it in full type help age.

Age
===
The age of your character is calculated based on the system time when
your character is created. Approximately one real life month will equal
one game year. Your characters start age is dependant on your race. The
long lived races tend to start out older than the shorter lived ones. If
you wish to roleplay an age that is very different from your score then
let the immortals know with an application. We generally have no problem
with someone playing an age older than their score. We do however do not
condone anyone playing a child without getting immortal approval.
