I wasnt sure where to put this but...
I think it just makes more sense to set the mining type by room individually game-wise. IRL i can see the understanding of setting by area since mines usually hold one ore. But as a game it makes player less dependant on copyovers and crashes that reset areas. After all the goal is to not have crashes, so areas don't get reset as often.
Another possibility is having areas reset their mining settings on certain ticks?

There are currently some twenty or so places that a character may mine to discover the ore they are seeking. In my opinion this is more than enough to enable players to find what they seek.
If you made it possible to mine a different ore in every square, then an experienced player could quite easily discover every type of ore and gem available without ever leaving one area.
ICly this isnt so bad, but it goes back to my comments about balance again really. Putting no delay or restriction on players obtaining ore would have wider impacts upon the game - economies wiped out when someone sells a dozen platinum longswords, every player and his dog armed with titanium weapons and wearing titanium armour.
