Ore finder
Ore finder
I was thinking about it and decided to post it, What if a High level priest of Moradin could cast a spell of "Find ore" like detect buried but you can see the ore that is possible to get there and have a better chance to retreive it. Just wanted to put it out there.
You know.. there are times when I can't get online and I get soooo bored I sit down with my AD&D Core Rules 2.0 Cd and bring up the DM's Tool Kit and go roll up lots of treasure, just to see what comes up... LOTS of magical items... I love some of the strange things that pop up from random rolls... the magic weapons that have abilities with intelligence and can talk and such.. my favorite ability they put on them is being able to know all gems, and kinds and where they are in a 20 ft. radius....or be able to detect sloping passages and large traps in a 10 ft. radius... chaotic good helps.. hehehe...but what I've learned about enchanting weapons or armours, I always understood you have to know the spells or prayers you're putting into the enchantments... so they've got to be out there, but probably not coded...I bet there aren't any talking swords out there like that..could make a great new way for IMM's to pop in...hehehe RP! Let's have people arguing with their weapons!!!!
What the Mind of a man can conceive, the Will of a man can achieve.
How about if the spell merely detects what ore the room is set to at the moment and if the room is set yet? I agree, with the spell the mining chance should be higher.
Mebbe the ore in the surrounding rooms too maybe?
(Priests of Garl should get it too )

Basically, I beleive that when the rooms are reset, the first person to mine in that room sets what ore that rooms mines. So a miner with a high level in mining has a chance of setting it to anywhere from tin to titanium. While a character with a lower level would have less metals that they can mine and such can only set it at lower metals, but until the next crash or reboot, that room will only mine up to that certain metal. (which is why they ask experienced miners to go deeper so they dont accidentally set the safe newbie mining areas to really high metals, thus being unfair to the lower level miners)
So basically, perhaps the spell responses could be.
If the room isnt flagged as underground:
You are not far enough beneath the earth to detect any ore.
If room hasnt been set yet:
You cannot detect any major veins of ore in the area.
If it has been set:
You detect a large vein of <metal type> ore in the surrounding earth.
Now, improving your chance of mining is a stretch perhaps, but (I know nothing about coding so forgive me if im wrong) it doesnt sound like it would be very hard to code.

A prayer which lets a miner know what has been mined in that area, or if it is as yet unmined...
A good idea, though I think the idea that it should improve mining skill as well is a little too much.
Mining improves mining skill... it is a long and sometimes tedious process, but the best way to truly appreciate the dwarven roleplaying experience
The only concerns which I have about such a prayer would be
- someone using the spell in every square in an area to determine the boundaries...
- the reduction in interaction and roleplay between dwarves. If no priest had to ask what veins of ore had been struck, things would get very quiet in the Halls
- it also gives a further advantage to a class which already has many trade related advantages over non-priests.
Previous posts under 'Mining responsibly' have talked over this subject, I'd be inclined to say we should work at it with RP before resorting to code
Mark finds... so others know what is there
Leave find markers alone... so others know what is there
Speak with other miners, talk about your finds...so others know what is there
Venture outside of the Halls and prospect other mines and tunnels (there are as many again, places outside the Halls to mine as there are in it), relay that back to the Halls...so others kn... You get the idea I hope
And above everything else.... bear in mind that any dwarves who have achieved any degree of skill in mining have all gone through what you are going through now.

Remember, should you encounter an angry Dragon and your only company is a Halfling...
...you do not need to run faster than the Dragon, only the halfling.
It's a wolverine, not a skunk... sheesh

Yes, but the average dwarf would likely be taught from the moment he/she had their first mug of ale how to read a tunnel. Identifying characteristics and such common to areas where this ore or that ore would likely be found. Heck, I can do that myself in real life to a degree. Rock color, density, depth, ect. ect. ect. all give hints as to what is likely to be found with a bit of digging.
Maybe not a spell or prayer for dwarves to be considered, but I've read enough books where a dwarf knows theres something worth digging for here or there. They don't just say, "Well, lets just build a mine here cause I like the scenary." They can tell whats there usually. Its in their blood.

You do not need to change the world, merely leave it a little better than how you found it.

My suggestion as to what it should be would have to be a racial skill. Inept at start and with no trainers of the skill in the game. Allow it to drain a little from stamina because wandering around examining rock styles and such would drain a bit. Also, put a timer on it like mining, smithing, ect has because it would take a minute or two to study the rocks.
Enjoy,

Well once you have a significant level in mining you can spend a few tries and find out what is in the area. I don't see the need for a new skill or trade. The only thing that would make sense is if you are talking about being able to change what is already set to the area.
Otherwise swing the pick a few times and you have the same answer.
