I know that his is a bit complex but it's a random suggestion
All what is in the combat skills list would progress at a fixed rated, ie like if the character had int 16 or so under the actualy system, and the advance rate could not be modified anyway, this would end with the need to have brillant fighters in order to be good fighters, still intelligence will be needed to the tactician roleplayed fightedrand other more intellectual characters RP.
Now in the skill list we would only have actual skills, these skills would advance according the combination of class+intelligence+racial bonus, ie: a human cleric with 12 int would advance skills at a 5X rate (2 skill points each cleric for being cleric, 2 for a 14 int, 1 extra point for human bonus advantage as in D&D), a dwarf bard with 16 int would advance at a 9X rate (6 skill points each level for being a bard, 3 points for 16 int), this also would be applied to trades.
