Allowed Race/Class Combinations Helpfile

Post by Raona » Wed Mar 26, 2008 11:30 am

Peverell helpfully pointed out that we do not have a current listing of what races are allowed to choose what classes. Time to fix that, i.e., to update 'help races allowed'! Let's start with a list of the races...am I missing anything? (Note that some of these are not yet fully implemented!)
Human
Dwarf
Elf
Halfling
Half-Elf
Orc (Grey, Mountain)
Drow
Halfdrow
Gnome
Aasimar
Fey'ri
Genasi
Tanarukk
Tiefling
Aarakocra
Centaur
Bugbear
Goblin
Hobgoblin
Lizardfolk
Wemic
Yuan-ti

There are subsets of some, if you want to include them. Specifically,

Elf > Wild, Wood, Moon, Sun
Dwarf > Shield, Gold, Gray(Duergar)
Gnome > Forest, Deep, Rock
Halfling > Ghostwise, Strongheart, Lightfoot

Off the top of my head I can't say which are and aren't in game.

I don't know if you have to bother with the races that have yet to be introduced to the game. I would potentially wait until they are put in as playable options and just focus on those that are currently playable.
May you find the knowledge you seek. If you find something else, it is still knowledge, and as such, still a gain.

I am interested to see how it all looks in one helpfile to be honest. With all these races it may be best to create an image and place it on the website and link it to the file in game.

As so long as the races that are not availible are clearly marked as "Not availble" it should be fine to do everything. I know it's annoying staring a list of things you can't play personally. But maybe a comming soon marker would be good.

And I'd LOVE picture links. That way I know damn well what I'm getting int and I'm not just another pretty orc. :)

I agree - the current table (http://www.gallwey.com/fk/help.php?keyw ... earch=true) is rather confusing and would probably work better as a nicely laid-out graphic :)

Maybe the currently unplayable races should get a row on the table, but with a "Coming Soon!" banner, rather than class information. Unless it's already decided what classes will be open to them, in which case it could be useful to include them and allow people to plan ahead/start hoarding kismet :D But, hmm, might be best to just concentrate on what is possible right now.

The one thing that's always annoyed me about the races helpfiles is that none of them (that I've seen) have the kismet requirements for them. I think it's important to keep our players informed rather than possibly waste their time creating a test character to see if they even _can_ create the race/class/alignment in question.

We could add a column for that.

Excellent suggestions, all!

Here's a rough sketch of what I've got right now...thanks to everyone for the input, please give me more! Either info to put into the table, or corrections, or more (great!) suggestions on formatting and the like. Thanks!

Note: I guessed about "In development" vs. "Coming soon," so those of you licking your chops to make aquatic elves and Yuan-ti - don't get your hopes up!

That's looking really good so far! I'm especially liking the kismet-at-a-glance!

Looking good - but I dispute the 'evil only' under necromancer. While the only existing guild currently in game would certainly not be suitable for goodlies, neutrals can swing it. Plus, good necromancers could apply for guilding.

Looks very very nice :)

One point Orogs are not currently in Game.

And if you want any input on what classes a Drow can become let me know.

They would have to build a goodly necromancer's guild, I don't think you can simply apply (unless of course you were evil, joined, and then went good). I think anything that doesn't have area support shouldn't be included in the help file and when it gets area support, it could be added. That way people can look at the help file and create their character without having to do all of that only to find out that the choice they wanted isn't possible because it isn't in the game yet.

Fine - but it still isn't evil only. I've seen a good aligned necromancer in game before, and I play a neutral one :P

These are just the sort of things I'm hoping for feedback on - also lists of what classes are open to what races. I'll make the changes reflected in the comments above, please keep them coming...and thanks!

To my knowledge here are a few race-class restrictions:
Fighter: every race
Ranger: human, elf, halfelf, genasi(?), aasimar(?), centaur, wemic
Faithed Priest: every race
Thief: every race
Druids: human, elf, halfelf, and earth genasi

The wizard schools are where it gets tricky. I'm not sure myself on them.

Now I have been off and on for a while so I might not be up to date with all of this. Ill put a question mark beside the ones I am more unsure of than others.

The only reason many of these restrictions are here are because of lack of area support.

Wizards and Races:
Illusionists are restricted to gnomes.
Orcs, Dwarves, and Halflings cannot specialize?

Wizards and Alignments:
Invokers cannot be evil.
Necromancers cannot be good.
Illusionists cannot be evil (as well as must be a gnome)?

Druids and Races:
Druids must be an elf, halfelf, forest gnome, centaur, ghostwise halfling, wemic, earth genasi (which is weird), or human.

Druids and Alignments:
NG, LN, TN, CN, NE

Edit:
Oh wait, is this even about alignments? O.o

Let's go for the whole ball of wax - our objective here is to provide solid guidance to anyone hoping to make a character, such that they don't end up planning to go down a path that is actually closed to them.

I've updated with the information provided above - thanks, and keep it coming!

The transmuter's guild is currently not open to evils AFAIK.
