I always explained it as detachable body parts...

I'd forgotten that Mr. Potato Head had an evil, aggressive medieval predecessor popular with children on Toril. : )

I like this idea because currently, if Joe Sunite is fending off a bandit and defeats him, code might force him to automatically cut off the bandit's scalp, which might not be appropriate to Joe's roleplay. Kelemvorites aren't going to deface their enemies' corpses by cutting off fingers and toes, unarmed wizards and monks aren't going to tear off body parts with their bare hands, etc. There are plenty of examples.

Most mobs already have this trophy part that can be removed, so a good share of the work is already done. Leaving the choice to take that trophy to the player rather than making it automatic would be nice.

Easy enough to fix the bandits, and other mobs that stick the trophy in your hands. Just change the death program to load the scalp, but not give it. So that the scalp actually has to be gotten from the corpse, as approriate to a PCs RP (well... long as autoloot isn't turned on... it causes more grief than it's worth sometimes anyway.) echoes for the act of obtaining the part could be left for the smoting.

That's a good solution so far as NPCs are concerned but still doesn't help with characters seeking proof of death from a PC for whatever reason. I suppose an item could do but outside of a very few items, most things could come from anyone. Anyway, short term, that's an excellent suggestion.
